653 Broadway and it's adjacent neighbors after a significant fire destroyed several buildings which went through to Mercer St. to the West. The Feb 1979 fire completely gutted the interiors which collapsed, amazingly leaving the stone facades which date back to 1870 intact!
New buildings were constructed behind the facades after they were shored up to prevent collapse.

In 1855 Charlie Pfaff opened a basement beer hall at 653 Broadway, a few doors south of the Winter garden. The building was demolished and the present building with it's marble facade was built in 1870

Stereoview card from the 1870's showing these buildings, interesting thing is 653 was a different building, obviously it was demolished and a new building erected to match the two beside it. Also, the very end building in this row of 4 seems to have has one additional floor added to it along with a sheet metal cornice!

This cast-iron multiple piece capitol came from 653 Broadway, the scene of a huge fire that burned the entire building down to the ground except for the Broadway facade! I saw several of these on the floor in a pile and inquired about one of these from a workman when they were clearing the site to rebuild but save the facade. The fellow I talked to slipped this one out the door to me for some cash $100 as I remember.
